DID YOU KNOW?
Under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, 1992, no driver may handle, offer for transport, or transport dangerous goods unless they:
- Hold a valid training certificate, or
- Are actively working under the direct supervision of a trained and certified individual
Whether transporting gasoline, diesel, propane, paint, aerosols, lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, alkaline batteries, or compressed gases, household cleaners, solvents, fertilizers, automotive fluids, fire extinguishers and other regulated consumer and industrial products., drivers must be able to identify hazards and execute emergency procedures instantly.

Operating with uncertified drivers places an organization in immediate jeopardy. Transport Canada does not accept ignorance as a defense and Transport Canada Inspectors are increasingly vigilant. If a driver is found without a valid certificate, or if a company directs untrained employees to handle dangerous goods, the penalties are immediate and severe:
- For the Company: It could face substantial fines, potential prosecution, and the seizure of vehicles and cargo. A single violation can cripple a bottom line and halt operations.
- For the Driver: Uncertified operators face personal liability, heavy fines, and potential jail time.
- Operational Stoppage: Inspectors have the authority to detain vehicles and halt operations immediately until compliance is proven.
- Insurance Voidance: A TDG incident involving an uncertified driver can lead to denied insurance claims.
- Reputational Impact: The company’s safety rating and its clients' trust are on the line.
